Chapter 19

The closest I’d ever been to a real fight before was when the Stormfeather House had been destroyed. And even then, I’d been limited to skirting the edges. I hadn’t been anywhere close to the main action.

Beyond that, in my old life, videogames had been my limit.

Now it seemed I was going to get a more intimate understanding of what it was like to fight for my life, and that of the people I had come to care about.

Yet to begin with, there was nothing to do except wait.

The guard had told us that the Benttusk attackers were on their way. That somehow, they’d known when the Masters and I had left the lodging, and that they had tracked us through the tunnels, all the way to the rotunda.

How exactly the Benttusk House could have known this, I didn’t understand. Nor did I truly know how the guard was getting his information.

For all I knew, there were those in the guards with mana gifts as well, that allowed them to see across distances. Or perhaps it was as simple as a network of runners.

Either way, Master Ruthnol and Sandria both accepted the guard’s word as gospel, and that was good enough for me and the others.

Surrounded by rings of Amberclaw guards, with more turning up with each passing moment, the Masters and I prepared ourselves as best as we could.

Aylin and Jaylin sat in matching lotus positions on the stone rotunda floor, both of them looking calm and serene.

Master Amort and Ruthnol stepped through their respective katas, apparently finding solace in the performance of the arts.

Sandria had dragged a small, broken down table in from the wall, and was sorting out the various vials of potions on top of it, pulling them one by one from her the pouch she wore at her waist, placing them reverently on the table and muttering quietly to herself.

It seemed that Marielle and Sylvian had taken it upon themselves to watch over me. Whatever else they might have been doing, they’d put it aside, and seemed intent on doing what they could to calm me down.

“We will get through this,” Sylvian said. “The Benttusk plan cannot have accounted for the strength they are about to face. They seek to take you out of the game, but don’t realize they will have to go through all of us to do so.”

I knew that the else woman was just trying to put my mind at ease, but I couldn’t help but focus in on the flaw in her logic.

“The Benttusks are House Amberclaws closest allies,” I said, repeating back to her what I had only recently learned myself. “They would have been watching my matches in the qualifying tournament. Surely they would have seen each of you there, supporting me every step of the way. Surely, they know who you are, and what you’re capable of?”

The elf woman didn’t have any real answer to that, and I knew I was right.

“What of them?” I asked, changing the topic.
